Because you’re not getting much work done anyway (2020 edition)

Let’s face it: 2020 has been a serious dumpster fire and the more distractions, the better. In that vein, here are some of my favorites from this year. Happy holidays.

• Pretend to work from other people’s homes. Perhaps a home on the coast of Hawaii is more your style? Or a window view from a home in Lisbon, Portugal?
• “Where www means ‘wretched writers welcome.’” The Bulwer Lytton Fiction Contest has challenged folks to write the worst opening sentence to a hypothetical bad novel since 1982.
• Be a tourist on the Map of Music. Put in an artist/group you like, and find others you will probably like on the map.
• Send your scream to Iceland. Record your scream, and it will be played IRL in a region of Iceland. Very cathartic.
• Play a virtual drum kit. There’s even an easy-to-use sequencer so you can make your own rhythms.
• Experiment with what might be the most annoying site on the internet. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
• Play with what amounts to virtual LEGOs. Your imagination is the limit and there’s no danger of stepping on any of them.
• Explore the least-watched videos on YouTube. This site curates the unseen nooks & crannies of the world’s most popular video platform.
• Amazon sells some horrible stuff. This site is a tribute to some of the worst merchandise available on Amazon.com
• Maximize your caffeine intake. This site uses science to help you stay awake.
